It's Been a While

l hope you don't mind me asking a question... I've always wondered about how much creative freedom you get when
working for a larger client like that. Do you sit down and collaborate on color scheme, font, graphics... or do they already
have some sort of a mock up for you to then recreate with better quality and detail? Or is it completely up to you?
With this client I actually have a lack of information to work with. That's good in a creative sense because I basically do whatever I want. It makes the process take longer and makes it more challenging though. I'd prefer if they gave me a few of the basics like the specific copy they want on the flyer. I'm the designer, so it's not my place to determine the copy or to guess which promoters need to be mentioned for an event. For instance, in the case of the bottom flyer, I specifically asked what copy they wanted to include on there since it's a general ad and not a flyer for a specific event. I got no feedback until after my original design was submitted. That's when they told me they wanted that "glitterati & glam" copy on there. Things like this aren't a big deal to me, but I typically get the assignment a day or two before the deadline and things like that can throw the project behind schedule. With that being said, it's worth mentioning that I do design as a side job so I only get about 4 hours in front of my (home) computer on any given weekday to work on these jobs.

I know I've rambled on a bit in this reply, so I'll finish by saying that I'm happy to have the creative freedom that I have with this client and if given the choice between the circumstances I mentioned above or having plenty of time to work on a project and all of the necessary info as a tradeoff for creative freedom, I'd choose the creative freedom, lack of info, & tight deadlines in a heartbeat!
I had no idea that this wasn't your full time job. Just by glancing at your posts, I would have assumed
you were into design full time. Does it happen to be rather profitable as a side gig, or is it something done as more
of a creative outlet?
It has the potential to be profitable if you're talented. I've always wanted to go into the design field, but never really followed through with getting off my butt to actually do it until recently. So for now I don't have enough work or experience to go for it full time. I plan to try it full time in the next year or so.
Wow, I found a person on here that is into graphic design as well. I like what you have done for the layouts. My favorite is the "Full-page ad for Spy Bar in 'Good For Party' magazine" The fonts and colors you chose really make the piece work. It also has a great deal going on with the swirls and pictures but its not TOO much, its just perfectly put together. I do like the other pieces you did for them but the text for the "full-page ad for Spy Bar's 10 year anniversary" has a really extreme glow that is almost distracting, making the text difficult to read, thats my only beef with it. It really is great, and I think you could do this full time if you wanted too. :) good luck
